Subject: very sad day indeed
Honest question:  when I first heard this report and some in the media
were leaning toward the theory the shooter was a stressed out soldier
due to multiple deployments, why was that little voice in my head
saying this was an act perpetrated by a muslim?

Very sad story.

That little voice is also telling me that in the days to follow the
excuse makers will begin to blame us..

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/05/fort-hood-shootings-7-dea_n_...

Military officials were starting Friday to piece together what may
have pushed an Army psychiatrist trained to help soldiers in distress
to turn on his comrades in a shooting rampage that killed 13 people
and wounded 31 in Texas.

Scroll down for the latest news listed chronologically. Live updates
via Twitter are HERE.

6:50 AM ET -- (AP) The suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was
on a ventilator and unconscious in a hospital after being shot four
times during the shootings at the Army's sprawling Fort Hood, post
officials said. In the early chaos after the shootings, authorities
believed they had killed him, only to discover later that he had
survived.

In Washington, a senior U.S. official said authorities at Fort Hood
initially thought one of the victims who had been shot and killed was
the shooter. The mistake resulted in a delay of several hours in
identifying Hasan as the alleged assailant.

Authorities have not ruled out that Hasan was acting on behalf of some
unidentified radical group, the official said. He would not say
whether any evidence had come to light to support that theory.

If that's the first thing that popped into your head, maybe you should
log off your computer for a while and go for a nice long walk.

I think it's something other than what you suggest.  Yes it is the
first thing that popped in my head, and I walk every day.

What I believe:  humans have a gut instinct on things that is a tool
we can utilize because it is an evolved talent that we're supposed to
refer to.

It goes back to our previous discussion about Turkey and the proposed
Armenian genocide resolution.  There are those who are stupid, and
there are those who are "willfully stupid" (ignoring or blocking our
gut instincts).

And Ray demonstrates how he is one of two things:

1) Stupid
2) Willfully Stupid

Hmmm.  The first thing that popped into my head was that some poor
grunt went off the deep end from PTSD after one too many deployments.

It turns out that the alleged shooter is a psychiatrists who treated
returning soldiers for PTSD.  Who happened to be Muslim.

So while your gut reaction proved to be correct,

Supposed to?  I dispute that.  While your "gut instinct" regarding the
shooter's religion proved to be correct, it is notoriously unreliable.

A lot of people at Fort Hood who were within the range of shooter are
alive today, not because of "gut instinct", but because of training.
The policewoman who disabled the shooter and the people who attended
to the wounded were applying the training they had received, not
relying on "gut instinct".

George W. Bush was a great one for relying on "gut instinct" and look
at the mess he left behind.

I tend to trust those who do their homework over people who rely on
"gut instinct".

And you have repeatedly demonstrated that you are in the "willfully
stupid" category. :-)

As a veteran, I don't think it's impossible,
I feel it's not likely.  This is the second terrorist attack from a
muslim soldier.

And never was deployed.

I disagree.  Evolution has given a tool for us to use.

Gut instinct comes about through training and repetition.

You mean a democracy in the middle east?

Nope.  Everyone who wants a clue, knows the motivation.
