Republicans hadn't lost in the region in more than a century.
Owens defeated Hoffman despite a 45,000-voter registration edge for Republicans and big-name endorsements for Hoffman from former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, former Republican Sen. Fred Thompson and others.
Democrat Bill Owens has captured the special election in the 23rd Congressional District.
It was a battle that became a fight over the identity of the Republican Party.
Doug Hoffman, the Conservative candidate conceded the race to Owens very early Wednesday morning.
Owens defeated Hoffman and Republican Dierdre Scozzafava in the heavily Republican 23rd district that spans close to a dozen counties across central and rural northern New York, including Oswego and Madison counties.
With 92 percent of the precincts reporting early Wednesday, lawyer and retired Air Force Capt. Bill Owens defeated businessman Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate, 49 percent to 45 percent, after a boost from unified labor efforts in the last days of the campaign and the withdrawal of the Republican candidate over the weekend.
"This has been an extraordinary journey," said Owens, who thanked his family, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
The race had been getting national attention, with some calling it a referendum on President Barack Obama and others saying it could help Republicans focus their message to attract more people to the party.

Harry. The real news is that Hoffman ran as a 3rd party candidate and almost got half the vote. How often does that happen?

Hoffman ran as the real conservative, painting the actual Republican candidate (a respected centrist who has been an important figure in state Republican politics) as a closet liberal. He split the base and drove moderates away from him. Some of those moderates still voted for Scozzafava as a protest vote, but many would have defected to Owens.
The real news of this race is that if a moderate Republican is given the choice between backing a tea partier or a Democrat, he will choose the Democrat. You tea partiers are irrelevant.

Perot only had 18% of the vote as I recall?
Anything over 40% means the two parties are getting really scared. This will OPEN the door to Sarah Palin to do a 3rd party run with a good chance since NY is anything but conservative.
Republicans in NY are somewhere left of Hugo Chavez....

Please, please, dear god, let Sarah Palin make a 3rd party run!!!
The last time a rightwing nutcase made a 3rd party run, Ross Perot (the rightwing nutcase) took away from GWBush enough votes to elect Bill Clinton for eight years.

The Democrat candidate for governor of Virginia was soundly defeated despite the biggest-name endorsement from the sitting presidunce of the United States. Your emperor has no clothes. Stick that in your crack pipe and smoke it, Harry.
The Democrats lost the Virginia gubanatorial race by 18 points in a state Barack Obama won by 6 points last year. They lost the New Jersey gubanatorial race by 4 points in a state Barack Obama won by 15 points last year.

A Republican who receives the endorsement of the radical leftist Daily Kos over a Democrat is nowhere near the center in the USA, and there is nothing "closeted" about her liberal bona fides.

But this time the third party candidate got 45% and Clinton won with only 48% of the total vote.... So the third party is close to being a viable option to beat the Progressives and Democrats.
We may see Libertarian and the tea party who are Constitutional Conservatives actually move ahead.
Got the local Maine news on, a Homosexual is on there bawling. They'll be back. Can't tell you how many times they have been here. They think they can win us over, but they are making us irriatable as all get out. I can't bother to tell you what they did at the high school before the election., little kids were subject to this. Bill Clinton won in 1992 with 43% of the popular vote. Of course, that didn't keep him from calling it a mandate.

I stand corrected, thanks.....
This could be time to adjust the republican party or start a new party.
Anything to give a boot to the CFR and one world types.

. . America needs a few more conservative victories like this. Keep up the good work!
