...because otherwise it will be over here. As an ideology, like Nazism
or Communism, it must be recognized and combated not only in the arena
of ideas but where it threatens people, overseas or here. When it
stays in a place of safety it is like a cell that produces viruses
that go elsewhere.
If someone argues that retreat in the face of it will produce less
attacks, they are misinformed or worse. It will produce only more
attacks, in exchange for more surrender of liberties.
It flourishes in areas where it is allowed to hold power, and then it
spreads one psycho at a time.
Politically correct as an analysis perhaps, but no less true.
We want a society where women can learn how to read, people can choose
to worship or not as they please, and freedom of speech is a right. To
preserve that, extremist ideologies, from Aryan Nations stuff to
Islamic extremists, must be observed, and while speech is allowed,
planning and patterns of violent behavior must be addressed. At the
same time, foreign areas where such groups base themselves and plan
attacks on other areas, as well as terrorizing locals, deserve
attention. Afghanistan incubated Al Quaeda. Other areas that can
incubate other extremists are worth notice. If even the Saudis are
bombing areas known to harbor terrorists, that tells you that religion
isn't the thing with them, there is much more than that to consider,
and we have more allies in this than certain folks would have us
believe.
