Unlike ACC has two game difference limitation on selection process, Big East has no such thing. Actually, Gator Bowl president Rick Catlett said he will choose 7-5 Notre Dame over Big East team at 10-2 this year although it would be "difficult".
Catlett said the Gator was prepared to take Notre Dame at 7-5 last year, but the Irish collapsed and finished 6-6. NCAA rule prohits schools with 6-6 go to bowls unless no 7-5 schools to fill the bowls. Big 12 conference is petitioning NCAA to change the rule.
"Last year our alternatives were Big East teams with seven or eight wins," Catlett said. "This year, there could be Big East teams available at 10-2. It wouldn't be impossible to take a 7-5 Notre Dame over a 10-2 Big East team, but it would be difficult." This is the Gator's last chance at ND for the foreseeable future as the bowl shifts its ties to the Big Ten and SEC next season for the next four-year cycle.

Ok, i stand corrected. Unless the Gator chief is misinformed about his own contract, like the Sun Bowl was last year when they thought they could take 6-6 Notre Dame and then found out they coudn't.
