Why is it that racists, no matter how flagrant their racism, always seem to preface their racism with, "I'm not racist, but...."?
I remember I posted on RGP some time ago about a woman from the Southern US (I think it was South Carolina) who I saw interviewed on CNN after her brother had committed some kind of hate crime. She said very matter-of-factly something to the effect, "He wasn't racist, he just didn't believe different races should be associating with one other." You could tell that, to her, it seemed like the most natural statement in the world.
Now we have this scumbag *justice of the peace* from Louisiana, Keith Bardwell, who refused to perform marriages for inter-racial couples, saying, "I'm not a racist."
"It's kind of hard to apologize for something that you really and truly feel down in your heart you haven't done wrong," he said
What the fuck? How can you be a justice of the peace and not KNOW it's wrong to discriminate on the basis of race? How backward are these people exactly?
He resigned today, and now he and his apparently equally racist wife are defendants in a federal civil rights lawsuit. I really hope they get taken for everything they own and end up living in a cardboard box. They really need to make an example of this guy.

You cannot tell anyone that what they believe in , is in fact , wrong . This goes for "beliefs" as well as facts .
The 'climate issue " and religion should be prime examples . one is fact and one is a belief .. the right will have no reconsidering of their opinions on either .

Actually, yes, I can.
It's interesting that Bardwell's wife supposedly told the couple that *nobody* in the parish would marry them, and that Bardwell has admitted that he has refused to marry inter-racial couples several times in the past. So how is it that we have not heard about this before? Is this just considered accepted racism around there?

It almost sounds as if he's calling you a racist, based on the fact that, uh, well, based on the fact that he thinks you're a racist. -- ~ Seth Jackson

I've commented on this phenomenon before on RGP. It's the latest right-wing strategy. If you point out blatant racism, you are a racist. I still don't quite follow the logic, but it seems to be the wingnut deflection du jour, and apparently they think it's effective.

I've said it before, perhaps not here -- the most effective method ever devised to know what conservatives/Republicans/barking wingnuts are up to is to look at what they're accusing their enemies of doing.
It's not just RGP, it's the whole ever-narrowing pukefunnel of conservative politics these days. The truth of something doesn't matter -- if it sounds bad for your imagined enemies (you know, the ones you're told to fear by your Herd Elders), repeat it. Simply ignore facts to the contrary -- your wingnut buddies (slip slop slurp slurp suck suck gobble) will be right there at your back, or something.
would that racist label apply to someone who said "typical white person" or "There was something about him that made me wary,a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white" or?

Not against the law to be racist Bill. Find your self righteousness from lily white Vancouver B.C laughable. The JOP didn't violate any law , he just didn't uphold it , done everyday in this country.
Any lawsuit against him will be thrown out. Your outrage would be more consistent if you were equally as upset at the racism of, oh say Jeremiah Wright.
In most cases, no. In this case, I think it is very much against the law. In any case, it's dead wrong.

You mean the "lily white Vancouver" where whites are a minority, or, at most, a very bare majority? That one? Call me naive, but I am having an extremely hard time imagining something like this happening in Vancouver, where mixed race relationships are as common as dirt.

I think you might be wrong on this one.

Thrown out? mmmmm, don't think so, bo. If this gets "thrown out", I will give you a prize.
