With all the new and much younger talent coming up through the ranks, a better class of driver is taking seat in the NASCAR premier series, Cup, Nationwide, and Truck. The younger drivers do seem to out perform seasoned drivers. It would seem better for N to have a field of younger age group drivers than a mix of old and young.
N might consider imposing age limits for drivers just to weed out the old guys and under performing drivers. Petty, T. Labonte, Schrader, M. Martin, etc.. all are examples of drivers who should go away.
Younger and more risk taking drivers make for a better race.

Can't do that. Mark Martin still has a few more official retirements to go through.

There are laws against age discrimination. These drivers also are able to attract sponsers and unknown drivers are not.

I don't understanfd why everyone wants to lump Mark Martin in with the "over-the-hill" drivers. The guy is still competitive, and still better than most of the guys out there now, regardless of age.

Its all about the money. NASCAR has proven over the years that "better racing" is not as important as "better revenue".

And Ken Shrader hasn't started his string of retirements.

Do you think MM puts himself in that category? He talks about retirement, he talks about age. Or do you think it might be the press constantly reminding us how old he is? Or a combination of the two?
I agree with your opinion that he's still competitive. Given top drawer equipment, he seems like a threat to win at most of the events he drives. It will be interesting to see how he does next year

I agree. I would put him in a car before a LOT of younger drivers.

He is the exception, tho.
There's a few guys who kept their edge for a long time - Gant and Bobby Allison most notably, and Martin seems to fall in that group.
But most drivers, even included some of the most successful, seem to have declined markedly when they get to that 48-49 point. Richard Petty and Darryl Waltrip being the most high-profile examples.

MM should hang it up, should be told to hang it up. Exactly what has he accomplished as a driver? I thought so, not much.

When do you hear the press talking about how old Martin is? He has made much more of his retirements himself than anything the press has ever said about him.

He'll continue to almost thrill people. Martin has never had the fire to really win the big prize and he doesn't now.
