ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Nawaz Sharif allegedly hijacked a plane in 1999. Nine years later, he hijacks a nation. With just twenty percent of the vote, he manages to hold everyone – Asif Zardari, Pervez Musharraf, ordinary Pakistanis and even Washington – hostage to the judicial crisis. Our political and media elites are busy in their little judiciary pastime while Rome burns. While we are busy in our little circus, the last laugh goes to General Hood, the notorious Quran-bashing commander of the Guantanamo Bay who most probably is in Islamabad right now attached to the U.S. embassy here. Happy countdown to May 12. BY AHMED QURAISHI
To All Pakistanis: China First! ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—To All Pakistanis: When Beijing Olympics came under attack, a Chinese mountaineer took the torch to Mount Everest. That’s the kind of Pakistani citizens we need to create. BY AHMED QURAISHI
Hey, Imran Khan, You Lost The Vote ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Just a few months back these elections were a joke, a conspiracy to legitimize Musharraf’s unconstitutional steps. Today, Imran Khan wants to get into the parliament. He claims the by-elections will be a referendum on the president. Someone please remind him that the last election witnessed the biggest voter turnout in Pakistani history despite his ugly calls for boycott. If our useless politicians can debate on a non-issue for 7 hours straight, why can’t they spend the same amount of time deliberating upon the solutions to Pakistan’s problems or on the issue of the Kalabagh Dam? A 'Nawaz Declaration' Now. The Murree One Is Dead ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Asif Zardari and Khawaja Asif almost locked horns in Dubai and that’s why Nawaz had to rush to meet Zardari. Signs are that Nawaz is trying to steamroll Zardari. The ‘Nawaz Declaration’ calls for an executive order. No such thing in the Murree Declaration, which is a written document. Nawaz is trying to force Zardari’s hand, and another storm is gathering. Poor Pakistan. So, basically, the elections have not benefited the nation. BY HUMAYUN GAUHAR
