The FIA has already begun its witch-hunt, searching the Internet for the 'criminals'. Prime Minister Gilani wants no newspaper to write anything about him without checking first with his press secretary. A 'dictator' like Musharraf never did any of this. This is the fake democratic leadership of our country where the President is busy with the jokes on him when the country is facing hostile action from Zardari's own allies in Washington. What can Pakistanis do if President Zardari gives them opportunities to make jokes? Who told him to alert the entire media by disappearing from an official dinner to go celebrate with his former girlfriends at a private party? Who is setting him up?

No we didn't. So why should it be Pakistan's responsibility to eliminate Afghan opposition and resistance groups? No, Mr. Zardari, this is America's war, not Pakistan's. Our war is limited to the tribal belt where Karzai and Indians are feeding gangs of criminals who call themselves 'Pakistani Taliban'. That's where Pakistan's war ends. The real problem is not ISI or sanctuaries in Pakistan. The real problem is that Washington won't talk to Afghan Taliban and other Afghan opposition groups and bring them into government in Kabul. Karzai and his Indian friends don't want this to happen and instead are egging on Washington to go to war with Pakistan.

At U.N. Mr. Zardari wasted two-thirds of the speech on his late wife. His pain [not Palin!] is understandable but he was standing there as President of Pakistan and not as Husband of BB. This was a visit focused on redeeming him in the eyes of the foreign powers that brokered the 'deal' that brought Mr. Zardari to power in exchange for pushing the American agenda and doing things that the military was resisting, like allowing U.S. military boots inside Pakistan. This is how 'Friends of Pakistan,' the business event organized in New York to seek economic aid, turned into 'Friends of Zardari', with all of the original backers of the 'deal' - U.S.'s Condoleezza Rice, U.K.'s David Miliband, and U.A.E.'s Abdullah al-Nahyan - surrounding their man in Islamabad.

Not Owais Ghani, the governor of NWFP. Terrorism inside Pakistan is partially linked to foul play on the Afghan side of the border, and partially to misguided local Pakistani extremists who, again, are influenced from across the border. The real issue is Washington's failure to bring peace to Afghanistan despite seven years of occupation. Mr. Ghani comes out to tell the truth: The U.S. must broker a power-sharing agreement with the head of the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Omar, in order to establish peace in the region. Mr. Ghani's also said that Hamid Karzai represents no one but himself and is dependent on a foreign power and that he is an obstacle to bringing peace to Afghanistan. When asked about allegations that Pakistan has used the Taliban to retain its influence in Afghanistan, Mr. Ghani replied: "We could counter that by saying India uses the Northern Alliance." Mr. Ghani's landmark proposal came in an interview published by London's Daily Telegraph. Here are excerpts.

Since 2005, NDS has emerged as a major source of strategic instability in the region. Saleh is articulate but not the brains behind the mess. He's just a good executioner.

 ----- Original Message -----
Mr. Quraishi,
I have been receiving many e-mails [PakNationalists] as well as following your articles and columns on your website. At this point in time, as an outside observer all I can really say is it looks like an incredible mess. While I have been receiving all this information on Pakistan and generally know its political history, the rest of it - the workings of the various groups from the military, the ISI, the various military groups, and the many divided tribal loyalties, a struggling economy, an apparently reasonably aware civic culture, a nominal democracy contrasted with militant tribes, the strengthening of the Taliban and al-Queda in certain regions - is a great mixture of disorder in my mind, which may ultimately reflect the reality on the ground.
