How to use the dictionary

Most dictionaries use a similar format, which is: The word, the pronuciation(s), the part(s) of speech (i.e. noun, verb), etymology of the word, and 1 or more numbered defintions with occational subdivisions (usually lower case letters).  It is the numbered defintions that cause problems in discussions.  When a dictionary entry has more than 1 meaning or sense, it means that the senses are different enough from each other to have a different meaning.  If the meanings are only slightly different but related, it will usually be put in a subset of the same number.  Here is an example from Merriam-Webster (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/light):

Main Entry:
1light Listen to the pronunciation of 1light
Pronunciation:
\ˈlīt\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English, from Old English lēoht; akin to Old High German lioht light, Latin luc-, lux light, lucēre to shine, Greek leukos white
Date:
before 12th century
1 a: something that makes vision possible b: the sensation aroused by stimulation of the visual receptors c: electromagnetic radiation of any wavelength and traveling in a vacuum with a speed of about 186,281 miles (300,000 kilometers) per second; specifically : such radiation that is visible to the human eye
2 a: daylight b: dawn
3: a source of light: as a: a celestial body b: candle c: an electric light
4archaic : sight 4a
5 a: spiritual illumination b: inner light c: enlightenment d: truth
6 a: public knowledge <facts brought to light> b: a particular aspect or appearance presented to view <saw the matter in a different light>
7: a particular illumination
8: something that enlightens or informs <shed some light on the problem>
9: a medium (as a window) through which light is admitted
10plural : a set of principles, standards, or opinions <worship according to one's lights— Adrienne Koch>
11: a noteworthy person in a particular place or field <a leading light among current writers>
12: a particular expression of the eye
14: the representation of light in art
15: a flame for lighting something (as a cigarette)

From this we can see that 1a,b and c are very similar in meaning, but 1c is in no way related to 5c.  Therefore, when we are discussing definitions it is essential that we are talking about the same number and not conflate one number with another.

To you.

Not that those two are reasonably intelligent. It's just that with
Keith, Brock, semi, daffy, etc. you could put a flaming bag of dog
shit on the theist side and it would look relatively impressive.

Like I said to Rap, even those that are reasonably intelligent do it.
When OldMan and simonsaysbye started making this mistake, I just
couldn't ignore it anymore.
