The GOP is truly disgusting. They scream and yell about democrats blocking off-shore drilling in the areas under moratorium but there is only an estimated 18B barrels in those areas. Meanwhile, there are 84B barrels in unexplored areas that are not under moratorium. So why open up the closed areas? And even if they did, it would take 10 years for the oil to get to market and would only drop the price of gas about 2%.
At the same time, repubs are talking the wonder of shale oil. Turns out there is more oil in shale in Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Montana than there is left in all the Middle East reserves. Sounds great, right? That's why Bush, McSame and repubs are pushing it. But just how do you get the oil out of the shale? Turns out you need to heat the shale to molten lava temperatures so it liqufies and the oil separates. This takes more energy that you would get from the recovered oil. So it's a net loss. Like pretty much everything about the republicans. Like corn ethanol.
Today the democrats in the House tried to pass a bill that would have released 70 million barrels of oil from the SPR. This would have immediately lowered the price of gas at the pump. When Clinton released oil from the SPR in 2000, gas prices dropped as much as 20% in some areas (like here in Mass for example. Dropped from abotu $1.65 to about $1.25). Republicans are constantly screaming about boosting supply since they are totally opposed to reducing demand so you would think they would be on-board with this plan. But no - they blocked it with procedural tricks. The bill actually passed 268-157 but the procedural tricks forced a two-thirds majority to pass it.
So there you are. Republicans care so fucking little for regular Americans and their struggles to afford basic necessities that they killed a bill that has been *PROVEN* to lower gasoline prices. Instead, they want to give you a gimmicky tax holiday. We all know what a crock that is.
I have an idea for a better way to use taxes to help Americans at the gas pump. Let them deduct their gasoline costs from their taxable income. A typical American middle class family buys about 1000 gallons of gas a year according to AAA (just under 20 gallons a week for a family with 2 cars). At $4/gal, that's $4000 dollars they could knock off their median income of $67,000. That means about $1000 in tax savings, or abotu 25% of their costs or abotu $1 a gallon instead of a measley 18 cents.
But this will never pass. The republicans would block it. Why? Because it doesn't do enough to help the rich. While a struggling middle class family would save about 1.5 of their income each year, or about 12% of their tax burden, for the obscenely rich, it translates into virtually no savings at all.
See, knocking the marginal tax rate from 39% to 33% means that someone making $5mil/yr is saving about a quarter mil per year in taxes. The plan above, even if the rich person had 2 hummers and drove them nearly constantly, woudl only save them about 0.2% of their income. ANd that just isn't enough for people who already have everything. So bend over and take it in the ass you everyday Americans. The republicans are committed to protecting their very rich friends from "class warfare" even if that means 95% of us have to starve to death.

I don't understand why everyone's falling for this Offshore stunt. It's about as good as the Gas Holiday thing. There are plenty of places for American Oil to drill already...plus the 10+ year deMcCain claimed that oil spills were a thing of the past. Then, look. Oil spill in the Mississippi river this week (http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/ 07/23/mississippi.spill/index.html#cnnSTCText). It could close part of the river for weeks... But, it doesn't really make the front page does it?? Then, CBS covers for him when he completely DESTROYS his facts on the Sunni awakening. I don't want to call it a conspiracy...but...you've got to be kidding me...

According to the LA Times, the offshore drilling issue is driving McCain's numbers UP in four key states. I mean, really? Are people that stupid?

A Laker fan, a democrat, and a mindless rant. Ladies and gentlemen, we have the trifecta.

Do you think Brad C would be able to wrap his little pinhead around the fact that the last time I voted for a democrat was in 1996?
Recognizing the sheer criminality of the Greedy Oil Party does not require membership in the democratic party.
