The Oral Tradition of the NT
Of incredible importance to this sort of discussion is something that is often either seemingly missed or glossed over by many scholars of some repute. In the first century CE the overwhelming majority of the population was illiterate. Even kings and government officials often could not read and had to rely on scribes and priests to read them scriptures and laws. (Leaving room for a little ass-kissing via prophecies yet to be written, perhaps?)... more »

Authors of the Old Testament?
Anyone who is interested in more information after reading this is encouraged to read anything written by Baruch Halpern. Since his work tends to be rather technical, as a starter text you might prefer to seek out 'Who Wrote the Bible?' by Richard Elliott Friedman. This book is absolutely fascinating and provides a lot of very useful, exceedingly well-researched information.... more »

10 of the Nuttiest Statements (so far) about the US Health Care Battle
10 of the Nuttiest Statements Elected Officials Have Made in the Health Care Battle By Joshua Holland, AlterNet Posted on November 7, 2009, Printed on November 7, 2009 [link] Even by the standards of our typically debased public discourse, one has to step back and marvel for a moment at the sheer, unmitigated craziness the... more »

The way to God is through Masturbation!
I know I'm going to challenge Atheists with it, and even more so Theists, but the way to see God is through Masturbation... "Oh my God!!!" Say you play Himi Hendrix, smoke a joint, and go in the search for "you know who." Hey God is all a Mental Masturbation, so you may as well enjoy the ride.... more »

Jesus baptizes doesn't huh?
John 3:22 is a simple statement that Jesus baptized while he 'tarried' in Judaea with his disciples. John 3:23,24 simply provide some background about John the Baptist. John 3:25,26 are stating that John's disciples and the 'Jews' (what were John's disciples, if not, also Jews?) had a question about the validity of purification in general and Jesus baptizing in particular.... more »

Number 9
Someone asked me why use the number 9 in the post "Gotta Love Numbers". Besides being an interesting avant garde Beatles tune, I wondered if the fool book had any 9's of interest. Did some searching through the archives and found this from an email sent to me by a Jim Dern..... 9 GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT... more »

Excellent Biblical Fiction
Here is Bible fiction at its best! :) In Matthew 4:1-12, Mark 1:9-13 and Luke 4:1-2 we have Jesus being led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness for 40 days of temptation and fasting, immediately after his baptism by John. In John 1:35 - 2:12 we have many days of activity by Jesus immediately after his baptism, including his first alleged miracle at the wedding in Cana and no mention of Jesus ever entering the wilderness.... more »

Christianism, Atheism and Cannibalism
OK, let's assume the following scenario: Your plane crashes and then there's only two of you left, the Christian and you, then you get terribly hungry... WHO MAKES THE FIRST MOVE? Note the possibility that you may be contaminated by other's body, ideas, etc. Well, if you have a fire, you will have to cook it good,... more »

Gotta love Numbers
  Take a letter's position in the alphabet and multiply by NINE. A = 1 x 9 = 9 B = 2 x 9 = 18 C = 3 x 9 = 27 D = 4 x 9 = 36 E = 5 x 9 = 45 etc, etc. So... J = 90 E = 45 S = 171 U = 189 S = 171 Add them up and ... 666 Yikes! -- "In my life, I have prayed but one prayer: Oh Lord, make my enemies ridiculous. And God granted it."... more »

Credit where due
In the 1980's before the growth of the web there was a beast called FidoNet which linked many computers (not in real time) such that discussion groups could be formed on various subjects. I used a database system back then called QBBS and I frequently draw on my posts from that database to redeploy here since I feel they are still relevant.... more »
